Congratulations to the Explorers who are the first non-school entity to enter the Michigan History Day competition! Their efforts at the regional competition held at Western Michigan University on March 7th has led to the team earning a place in the state competition.

Their exhibit: Exploring Merze Tate: Breaking Barriers Around the World features the amazing educational adventures of Merze Tate and the many “firsts” she accomplished around the world. The national theme of Breaking Barriers was the focus of dozens of entries from throughout southwest Michigan that allowed students to share what they knew about history through performance, exhibit, website, documentary, or essay.

Sasha Hollins, Aliah Ward, Alayna, and Nya Kuhn all worked together for entry in the Junior category for those in grades 6-8th. The Explorers created the concept that included interactive aspects such as a push-button spin game with four categories, a match Tate to the college she broke barriers, and an international map including images of the places Dr. Tate visited in her twice around the world leisure and professional travels.

Due to the coronavirus, the state competition scheduled at Central State University is now a video entry. Students will submit their entries via online platforms where judges will be assigned to rate and award them for the national competition.
