Explorers Interview Space History Maker

Dr. Proctor and Ziggy

KALAMAZOO (MICH)- What do you pack for a trip to outer space? How do you use the bathroom in a spaceship? Where do you land when you come back into the atmosphere? These are some of the questions curious Explorers asked Sian Proctor, the first African American woman to pilot a space mission as a SpaceX astronaut.

The Explorers received an exclusive interview with Proctor after a presentation sponsored by the City of Portage at the Air Zoo Aerospace Museum in Portage, Michigan. More than 200 space enthusiasts and historians listened intently to Proctor, whose energetic enthusiasm captivated those of all ages.

This was not the first time the Explorers had interviews with women “out of this world.” In 2017, Explorers met other women in space history. Students received an exclusive interview with Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space. That same year, they traveled to the University of Michigan for an opportunity to interview bestselling author Margot Lee Shetterly. Shetterly’s book, Hidden Figures, was adapted into a film that earned three Oscar nominations just weeks after the Explorers’ interview with the author.
