Explorer Aija Hodges, a junior from Kalamazoo Central High School, was a state finalist in the National Next Narrative True Colors Monologue Competition. The event was held on May 2, at the Apollo Theatre in New York City. Although Aija did not place nationally, she did a phenomenal job in her riveting performance of “One Second” by Rachel Lynett.

Thanks to Michigan State University’s Wharton Theatre program for sponsoring the Explorers in the Michigan competition. Nearly two dozen high school students from Michigan schools competed for a chance to compete in this inaugural competition. The prizes included more than $3,000 in cash and an opportunity for the top three winners to perform at the March on Washington Anniversary in Washington D.C. in August (2022).
