Exploring Nature with the Audubon Society Uncategorized by Sonya Bernard-Hollins - July 16, 2022July 16, 20220 The Merze Tate Explorers recently explored the world of birds with the Kalamazoo Audubon Society. Russ Schipper led a team of bird enthusiasts in sharing the amazing world of featured creatures. Explorers learned how to identify the sounds of local birds such as robins, sparrows, and cardinals. In addition, they learned how to spot our flying friends through binoculars while on the peaceful trails of Kalamazoo Nature Center located at 7000 N. Westnedge Ave. in Kalamazoo. After nearly five hours surrounded by the sounds of birds chirping, the sweet smell of wildflowers along the trails, and the beauty of the trails, the Explorers had a new appreciation for nature. The leaders also enjoyed spending time with the Explorers. Schipper recalled a conversation he had with Nariyah Reynolds as they completed their search for sounds. “We were on the trail walking back for lunch. In a very sincere tone, she offered that she really likes nature. I agreed. Then a few minutes later, she said that she didn’t understand why everyone didn’t like nature. It was the quiet sincerity that struck me as much as what she said. It is things like that which I most enjoy and appreciate about kids,” Schipper recalled.
