Captain Stacey Randolph Ledbetter was the first African American female to serve as a supervisor with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. While icons such as Rosa Parks and Sojourner Truth have roots in Michigan, not many know of the amazing women who broke barriers in Kalamazoo in the areas of medicine, education, entertainment, and business. Sixteen women such as Monique Grayson (pilot) and Abbey Lincoln (actress) are featured in a new coloring book by Season Press Publishing entitled: “Your Turn: African American Women of Kalamazoo.” Hon. The book was illustrated by Jerome Washington of Albion, Michigan with commemorative books printed by Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency. Season Press publishers created the book as part of a series to highlight African American history in communities, particularly for youth. “I feel it is important for young children, as early as kindergarten, to learn about the people in their own communities who have made a difference where they live,” said Sonya Bernard-Hollins, publisher of Season Press LLC. “While the book has African American icons, it is meant for all children in efforts to educate and inspire them to succeed.” The books will be available for purchase on Amazon in addition to bulk sales to organizations or businesses who want to sponsor up to 2,500 copies printed with their logo. Funds from the project will benefit the Merze Tate Explorers’ career and college readiness agenda.
